He smiled that cat that cate the canary smile, the one that always got him in trouble as a youth and made him money as an adult. " Okay that seem about right. I can give ya what I know from the person asking to have something done. There is a group of folks run through the backatown usually is good nice and what not. Sees the Sons found out dey only nice cuz dey robbin half the town. Sons wentand made dere displeasure known. Left two a da guys in intensive care the women weren’t so lucky. Two of the three of em ended up as permanent guests of Estelle until recently. The third one disappeared. Her brother thinks she got sainted. He just want a bracing and maybe some answers. I have a few folks willing to do mischief but I think what with them not caring it might mean more if something creative was done. Same fee ta be paid maybe a hair more but I know it’d be done right if an old hand came to da task." His phone having been set on the table all but forgotten his fingers tapped at the keys that weren’t present. He was playing in his head a habit he developed he couldn’t remember when but stayed with him even now. He didn’t sing or play much as he would like but he tickled the ivory every chance he got even sitting in with a few bands that rolled through. He was passable in that working musicians way where he could ick up a tune by ear and play it until he got tired without fail. As he tapped away he sang rapped his answer to her question, “I want a girl with extensions in her hair Bamboo earrings At least two pair A Fendi bag and a bad attitude That's all I need to get me in a good mood She can walk with a switch and talk with street slang I love it when a woman ain't scared to do her thing Standing at the bus stop sucking on a lollipop Once she gets pumping its hard to make the hottie stop She likes to dance to the rap jam She sweet as brown sugar with the candied yams Honey coated complexion Using Camay Lets hear it for the girl she's from around the way,” Sitting up in his seat he began moving to the music that was only in his head but as loud as the pop hundreds blasting out of the jukebox. “I need an around the way girl Around the way girl That's the one for me She's the only one for me I need an around the way girl,” He sang the chorus hitting the right notes even as his register was lower than the original. It was one of the few prizes in his collection grown though it had. Very few people gave him anything fewer still gave him gifts that mattered hers was in a place of honor. So treasured he’d stopped playing it and bought a copy to play as that one sat framed above his record player in his den. As the thought hit him he without looking swiped his phone sent a text and stood up chugging his drink. “Your business is finished yeah, Come on home and Laissez Les Bon Temps Roulez, its been a minute and some since I let my hair down. And honest is honest ain’t nobody really worth it ta do it with save you and our old Krewe. You member we shook the blocks for you left and Ren, Beau and Ozee went off to the forces. Dat boy Beau disappeared last year his folks say he went back out west when they moved out ta the You. City changing more with no storms than it ever did with’em. Anyways come on I gots a bottle of Sazerac with our name on it the good stuff.”

Slipping three twenties on the table underneath his glass he tapped her arm signaling for her to follow. They walked through the back of the building turning left then right exiting on the delivery bay. They’d done more than their fair share of sneaking and snooping early on in life he was sure she knew exactly where they were. Toulouse street while not specifically their neighborhood was part of their stomping ground. Close enough to Bourbon to inhale the action without getting under foot. It was also a minor tributary to get to Bourbon and as such it was always ripe with out of towners and those looking for the danger and action. In short it was crime alley hustlers, hookers not in the book, stick up men, and the whole gaggle of grey workers floated through the area. Nando smiled even as he slipped his hand in his pocket. He was a known man but occasionally someone mistook his dress for him being a mark and he had to put someone in their place. He moved ahead of Baby D to scope the lay of the street as well as to keep her hands free should she need them. Nodding to Joey who was leaning against the wall across the street Nando moved to his car which as usual was parked in the fire lane. He knew she’d recognize it as Flournoy’s old ride. Its baby blue paint as distinctive now as it had ever been. He’d of course had it redone and it now contained flecks and chips of metallic in its undercoat which made it gleam even in the dark that and he’d reupholstered the interior so that the inside was white on white leather and wood grained but otherwise it was Flournoys car a big four body trunk 1974 Oldsmobile 98 regency with all the bells and whistles. It was one his many treasures especially as he had won it beating Flournoy at his own game. As Joey closed Nando introduced his wheel man to Baby D. “D this here is Joey his peoples over in Metairie run one of the best chops outside the lower ninth. Joey this is one of my oldest and bestest in the world. Don’t mind the door I got this. Doe you can drop a line to our boy in blue and let him know I ain’t found nothing but I’ll be at home with the backdoor open if’n he need to harass me some. Oh and if he actually listen tell him ta bring some party favors.” Opening the door he waited for D to slide in. He was ready for her to ask questions if she needed to he’d all but told her that Joey’s fam had been responsible for the whole car thing that had cost Ozee those six months in Juvie. He drove the speed limit not a mile above and hummed along to the radio as they came to his house which was a stones through from their old neighborhood but on the better side of the tracks. He even had an actual lawn that was well kept not to mention a state of the arts security system that kept a watch on every way in and out of the building.

Girls head was on a swivel she had plenty rough times then stopping she whistled " ooooweee thas sharp as a shark tooth"
She eyed the car then smiled. Looking to joey taking in the new but not flinching she slid in and streched. Looking at him" so hows sheila?"
She chuckled unable to help her self then looking at his house "wow swaggy p"
Chuckled she got out and fallowed him in.

He kept watch and took pride that they were cut from the same cloth. "Yeah its cleaner than a nun and sharp as hoes tongue. You should see it when I set it right with a shine and polish." Sighing he eyed her just long enough to know whether he would keep her in his confidences. Yeah yes he would. " We don’t talk bout that no good one dere. She trying ta keep my youngens from me moved up ta Baton. Ain’t heard from her in a month was goin ta go up dere when all the troubles started she ain’t even answering my skypes no more." Hmmphing as he changed thoughts he chuckled as if he’d just told the best joke instead of shared a moment of pain. "But dat ain’t nothing ta talk bout now. Howse you out dere in all dat sunshine I never sure how you handle all that sunshine wit no dark alleys and nightlife. " Once inside he was tempted to show her around but figured she’d make herself at home as she pleased. He moved to the bar in the dining room. “I ain’t doin to bad but dat Del he got a nice flat over in Chalmette not far from his fam huge as an elephants dance hall. Course he still ain’t got no furniture he livin like it ain’t his and he won’t have it long.”

Brow raises at his truth nando with kids was a strange though. That also made her mad some and she didn't say nothing but she'd be stopping in baton on the way home no matter how bad it had creeped her out before. Shed make that no good hoe answer or dead her and bring him his kids. Either worked for her. " oh it got night life but its more stiff den two day old wonder bread in places. All dese gastropub goin khaki pant same hair cut dolce and gabbana buying ass folk. They pay dat good green doe when i'm mixin same shit po folk drink witha different name and a little slight o hand and fire."
Laughing at the ridiculousness of it then following him in she wandered like it was hers. Hearing bout del she eyed nando" foreal he got guwat like dat doe and a cop?"

Nando laughed and took a sip. It was the best Sazerac he could get and it was absolutely heaven. Making friends with the vampire Lucius was one of the best strokes of luck he’d come across. Or the worse when he thought about it. He knew first hand that no matter how bad things got they would be so much worse if Lucius was the one coming for you. He wasn’t as far as Nando knew somebody of importance in the Kiss but he was so damn likable it made cavities grow when he was around. The man was the picture of nice and that was the worse thing as Nando knew a Krewe that had done wrong and got caught by the Vamps. Lucius turn up sweet as pie and they just disappeared. Vanish but not before Lucius had them out gallivanting around town painting the town red as his favorite meal. They were all full of their cups carrying on as if they were milk twins grown up on the same teet. Form Nando could figure it was not an official action by the Kiss but something personal. Business was bad but personal was always worse. And now with their new leg breakers Raven and Chidera it was a combination of the both. "Dat sound like a hustler’s playground and depressing as shit flavored ice cream." Nando shook his head nope he would stay down here and thrive versus go west and blow up something big. The bigger the fish the more folks took notice. He knew he would do well but he was aware of his weakness to do too well at times. At least here he had nets in place to keep whatever his fall was from catastrophic. “Damn right, dat boy livin high and fine. He got de best of the worst luck. He got cut up some few years back. Was an infected that did it and he showed up on the test as infected his self. Course they threw him in the place they built underneath Jefferson. Him a cop in with real dangerous criminals that was infected. Boy they broke every bone in his body more than once. He hunkered down and got mean as them. Meaner really. Boy fought every day him against them and well turns out the city the state was dead wrong. He didn’t change. Some lawyer got into his head that the case was worth trying. It was tried and that boy won an undisclosed fortune. Got his self a house and his job plus promotion back.”

She laughed pausing to put on some old school r&b. Just something chill, babyface and tevin Campbell type groove. Sipping and then stopping cold "naw you playin...he got attacked on duity and survived so he got that wereblood but don shift? Shiii..but den they threw him in da zoo jail and lawd del."
She sat hard absorbing that. Her brain going to lord of all things" would a sew da heck out dem to uppity mufos but den he back wit um so"
Sje was just trying to picture him turnin furry once a month. Seems all nan Cheryl group was special some how scept her and nando tho she wondered sometime that she was so good with fire like it almost obeyed her a bit. She understood it like she understood nothing else and nando did gave his lil funny feelings he was always trying to pass off for gas or what ever. She wasn't convinced.
Nan her self had a lil weird bout her to as a child D had seen her do things no one should be able to and she had to be like eighty when they were young but didnt move like it. She knew from calls back that she was still alive and young acting as ever so that rang alarms tho she actually didn't think it mattered because you could tell her the woman was a certified alien from pluto and she'd still love her like the mother she needed and hadn't quite got.
Deep in thought then sipping and coming back to now

H slipped off his jacket laying it across the nearest chair and took a seat. She was heading to his hifi and he was interested in what she would throw on. It was funny to him that she’d put on Tevin. He’d been the warm up to a lot of their hang sessions. For all of their rough and tumble in the end they were music people each and everyone of them had found a love of music that made the world better for them. "Yeah weird as can be dat boy. I’m surprised no one ain’t come down and try and figure out why he ain’t go all hairy. Luckily they think us Yats too weird to funk wit. I worry bout him some. Well him Ozee and Remy. You know dat boy gone was gone go all de way his feet can carry him then all of a sudden he was back hanging wit Ren. He ain’t talk about it much what got him the boot from the forces but I think him and Ren ran across a similar thang. Especially when they both start messing with the Vamps. Ya know that’s why Remy ain’t here no more. Heard they put a whooping on him so bad made his head loose its shape." Slowly catching the beat, he stepped with his self, bopping to the beat as he sipped his drink. Only in the Yat would this early in the day be the perfect time to party. " He did he won’t tell me how much he got from dey asses but I can tell ya dat boy don’t owe no one and don’t need dat job but he hold on like its his mission in life." Spinning he slid closer bopping to the beat. Not a drop spilled or even threatened to. “Nuff bout dem fools I catch up wit dem often nuff. Tell me really bout you. You sure you good. You got them ghost bruises and I see you watching the doors and windows. Erethang good or at least not horrible for you?”

She sighed" yea but dem China men are crazy they don't like bad news and will hurt you so I keep and eye and ear out. I'm ok mostly tho just trying to keep off radar you know"
She shrugged and drank more then looked at him smirking. "You know del tole me the ole man loss da house and I can't be sad bout it wasn my house anyhow and wasnt no good memory there..be honest it could sink into the u and Id drink to dat"
She was a very haunted soul.

He met her eyes stopping dancing and really looked " I get dat.I really do. If’n ya need help just axe. I’ll come runnin so will most a da krewe still roun." Smiling he bopped and spun on his heels. His grin gew big as he knew what streak she could have. He knew he was about to share some mischief. "Well dat ain’t zactly true. He was bout ta lose da house. Del caught wind and bought the thing had guys out ta fix it up. He even worked wit dem to repair and rehab it. Den one day yore ole man got clear headed enough to member who Del was and stormed off sayin he ain’t never gon take a hand out from da punk who snuck him. Member yore ole man put a hur on Del. Well what ya ain’t know was Del got im back ore it. Nuttin major but the time he jus bout broke yore shoulder Del and me well Del really caught up to im over at jack’s place and whopped on im with a bag of oranges. He tol everyone it was from sparring wit Mack Reilly. True nuff Mack knocked him down but yore ole man beat Mack inta da hospital. Del snuck im and whomped on im til he was covered in orange juice and looking like he’d been beat by tree men. Alls I did wa trip im on da way out but once he was goin Del gave im what for real good. Only time yore ole man ever been out and he didn’t forget it all dese years later." Shrugging he took a sip and smiled some. “So yore house still dere and its yores Del did dat bit out a spite I dink. He never really spected you ta come back to it. Last time we actually spoke bout it he said you can come back and burn it ta the ground take the surance money and do what ya want wif it.”

She wouldn't put any one else in the path of the triad so that was a no at calling them in. Listening her face changed bout eight times between mad shocked sad happy and suspicion. In the end tho she felt like santa had made a second trip just for her and left a car with, a bow, with a puppy in a unicorn suit, sitting shotgun, holding a bag of money from its mouth.
Leaping to her feet and into his arms" you wouldn josh me like dat righ? You foreal its mine and del said I can do what I Want?"
The tough as nails brawler was bawling and sniffling and jumping up and down like she caught the spirit at one of them back woods churches. " oh less go and bring da weenies and marshmellas"

He watched her face though he didn’t stare. He enjoyed the truth there in. It was a long while since anyone dared to be open with him. Hell Dell even had to keep certain things from him due to his job. Ozee had disappeared and for a long while Beau and the twins had locked themselves up something fierce as they dealt with the vampires. Baby D however had always been a firebrand and a woman of her own inimitable style. She was always open direct and as fiery as her favorite flaming hot chips. As she leaped at him it was all he could do to keep from spilling. Catch her though he did he spoke keeping one arm aloft so his drink remained unwaasted. “Girl you know I don’t lie to nobody don’t deserve it. And you and me is cooler than December on the gulf." He did his best to not draw attention to her bawling but it moved him all the same and soon enough his eyes were moist though nothing fell across his cheek. " We can go alright but why done we at least finish one. I’d even planned on maybe getting onwstairs and getting the really good stuff out. You ain’t never had nothing like it. One of my connects said it’s a khemetian nectar made from the original recipe his creator gave him. Shit is good and strong with all the sweetness and hardly any of da sugar."

She wiped her eyes quick glad for no liner. She didn't wear makeup most times out side of work because that was a persona she put on. Set dressing as it were, listening she gulped what was in her glass which tightened her up for a min then yad her bout breathing fire." whew damn if it's stronger then this you on ta something sound good "
She was back to normal like the break hadn't happened. Letting him go she swayed and dipped as fugees filled the space between. Singing along" strumming my pain with his fingers singing my life with his words"
She was no lauryen but could do a little something her and nando used to duet on occasion for nan on a sunday since she wasn't much into church like most folk round here.

He smiled as she stated the obvious it was a some really good stuff. He hadn’t even shared any with Del yet Ren had a bit and had a high all night it’d been a long times since he’d seen Ren in a bottle but that had been one of them. It’d taken him back to Ren and Guy arguing over the same girl as they were drunk as skunks off the bootleg stuff they could get back in the day." Oh it definitely is cept he only gets me the stuff in small little clay pints. I keep axing him for the grown man size he says it is." Singing along" Killing me softly with his song; Killing me softly with his song. Telling my whole life with his words; Killing me softly with his song. I heard he sang a good song, I heard he had a style; And so I came to see him to listen for a while. And there he was this young boy, a stranger to my eyes…” He sang joining in as if it had been yesterday that they’d all hid with Nan early easter afternoon playing hooky from church and their families. The piano in her parlor loud and rumbley as a whole ensemble he and Baby D belting out the Roberta flack version as Del and Beau played percussion as if it were the Fugees version. Ozee and Guy doing backing vocals and Ren on his old beat up Saxophone. It was good times and one of his best memories of their youth. He sang her back t her starting point waiting on her to pick it up and run with it. He was no slouch musically but his talent was hard won. He worked at it every chance he got but Baby D was a natural if she’d only had the chance to practice she’d blow most folks out of the water. Sadly she had some of her old mans demons and was more prone to throwing a fist than belting out a tune.
