Samuel was never more sentimental than when seeing ghosts from his past. Though never for the reasons another would be. He mourned the man he could have been. The man he could have been if not for the adversities, hard choices, and calamities he’d survived by dint of his own tooth and claw. Estelle technically quantified as all three rolled into one. She and few other women that had passed through his life. His word however was his word. That was an inviolate truth with him. He had promised her that no matter what transpired between them that he would help her if he could. She had called in a marker and he would clear the books so that the happiness of his present would be as lightly marked by what had come before. He was not here on any sort of official capacity as such he needed certain protections only a guest could ever have. It would limit what he could and couldn’t do at least initially. If terms could not be reached then there were other options. He preferred diplomacy and the cold embrace of business as in the end either one took handled business or business handled the one. So as Monica dressed and prepared for her day of police merriment and education he prepared for his day of sight-seeing. He had never been a tourist but he played one today. He frequented places where most tourist would not dare. Seemingly stumbling in and out of places that were of no use to tourist with any sense of non-illegal compunctions. Sadly it was the best way get the gauge and scope of some of the mess Estelle had surrounded herself in. The picture he found was as ugly as sin. Seemed while he was distracted with Estelle the new Rex had been abusing the population of New Orleans. The picture that was painted did not seem to coincide with the image that Estelle had attempted to dazzle him with. She stated he was a knight in shining armor but form the rash of attacks both provable and simply hinted at he was responsible for the beatings and worse that took place last night. The two pictures didn’t sound right to Samuels’s shrewd mind as such he decided to pay a visit to the one area that he was told to stay away from. He stalked the area his security detail losing all but their direct mind it was a good thing that they had a surfeit of men due to a contract cancelling or postponing the need for an extra contingent. It was curious that they knew where he was headed almost before he did. They’d already had surveillance of the building to call up. Samuel didn’t begrudge them their preparedness but thought of the joke that they would surveil a psychiatrist office in his stead. He did his best to not hold this against Estelle. But he knocked against the Rex’s door as he entered. Entering he spoke with the office assistant finding an opening on the doctors schedule for a consultation he took it paying cash in advance and taking a seat. The appointment was for the next hour to which Samuel pulled out the Picayune Gazette he’d snagged along his route. The Sudoku wasn’t very difficult but the local adherence to more than a passing knowledge of French did add a difficulty to the crossword he found entertaining.

The session was finally winding down, and his patient Mike was finally getting to the root of the problem his wife was worried about money, but his girlfriend need more money to pay her bills. It was a lifestyle that he could not sustain he would have to cut one of the other. Of course Tibs could not out and tell him any of it. That was not the method of treatment that Tibs subscribed to. Most people who enters a therapist office assumes they will tell them what to do. That is not their job, their job is hear them out carry their burdens as they are guided through the problems and let the final revelation be their own. “Mike, it sounds like you as getting at the root of your problem eh? Well that wraps us until next week.”
TIbs was ready to close down and head home, where a frosty one awaited. The pictures that he and Dell looked at as well as the documents He needed to have verified before he could make the final move against her. He was going to put the final nail in her coffin if this was true. The whispers that she infected her girls was one thing but the fact that girls have been eighteen for four years is quite another. As well as that she had more “Eighteen years olds” than what would fit in her house. He stood and walked Mike to the door when he saw a well dressed gentleman sitting in the lobby. Tibs smiled broadly and nodded the man as way of greeting. Inwardly he sighed, he would never get to his business at this rate. However if he did not work he would have to take from the pride and Tibs did not want to do that.
Tibs shot a look at his office assistant she nodded and Tibs closed his door and took a deep breath and put the documents back in the drawer and awaited this new stranger.

Samuel took his cue from the assistant and moved into the inner office. He hadn’t expected the new Rex to be so closeted. It would certainly explain the slow until maneuvering to stave off attention and keep from being outed even accidentally. As he entered he gauged the space between them and instinctually scanned for cameras. He doubted there would be any inside the office as that broke several laws and several more social mores of his profession.
Foregoing a handshake or greeting until they’d both sat Samuel took the seat nearest the desk putting away his paper and removing his glasses. The gloves he kept in place as matter of course. Smoothing his tie he gave the Doctor time to take in who and what he was before speaking. Folding his hands into his lap Samuel waited a breath more. Inhaling and exhaling slowly he met the Rexes gaze.
“My name is Samuel Banks-Walker. I am the Militis of the Del Passsato Ombre Pride of New York and President of Exauda Militis Import Export Cartage and Shipping. I am not here in any sense of an official visit. Yet I thought we should take this time to grow an acquaintance.”
The message was clear though clarity was not a common trait and Samuel held no illusions. Oft times despite the clarity of a thing many saw what they chose and acted on those feelings instead of fact. He waited as the information was processed by the Rex the next words spoken would be the determiner of what was to come.

Tibs listened, without any outward expression. He was fairly closed down as he listened, This Samuel was Heiro’s brother they smelled similar as well as the name matched. He filed that away for use fairly quickly. Tibs was not quite sure why this lion was in his office and more importantly what he wanted especially since right now Tibs hands were full with both Estelle and Eric. Tibs would have to make this quick so that he could continue securing his weak points.
“Okay Mr. Walker what do I owe this visit? I have spoken with your brother already and await the assistance he offered as the current situation itself has gotten somewhat Dire. This is an odd time to have this conversation about how to start a friendship, perhaps you have noticed the political climate change of the area?”
Tibs wondered what game this guy was playing at. Fighting a two prong war and he wanted to chit chat. Tibs needed people and room to breathe not shipping information. Another thing Tibs wanted was to take a second look at the file that he had in his draw as he was trying to pour over the paperwork to figure what it all meant. There was more than what met the smell test over at Estelle’s and the documents were at the center of it.

Samuel picked at an errant piece of fluff he’d spotted on the crease of his pants. He could see why his brother would invest in the young rex. There was a certain innocent naivete in his bearing that Samuel knew would appeal to Mouse. It was a trait he himself found noble if foolish. It was a sure sign in his book that the wielder of such would not weather the storms of life easily if at all. He was a pragmatist that knew to survive one had to be willing to go lengths others would not. Boundaries were for the faint of heart and those that would not dare. To protect his associates, their families and himself there was nothing he would not dare or do.
“I was not aware my brother had an alliance with your Pride but that is not the reason I am here. I am here partially as a favor to part of your recent political climate change. I am hoping it does not affect my business interests here in New Orleans. And I am hoping that the recent spate of violence does not consume the life of one of the institutions here in the city. Specifically Madam Estelle. She is a small bit of less than forthright business but I am aware that here unlike elsewhere in the United States prostitution while illegal is somewhat regulated and allowed provided one maintains the stringent checks against the spread of disease. Perhaps we can reach terms that you would find acceptable provided there were certain additional safeguards in place.”
He was fairly sure that Terrence was not the source of the attacks he’d been made aware of. There wasn’t the tell-tale bearing of blood about him and even in the closeness of his office he was hurried yet not escalated in his bearing. On his home territory a lion was at his most dangerous and blood thirsty. Unless the doctor was a victim of multiple personalities Samuel did not read the kill for kills sake monster in him.

Tibs figured the smell of Estelle that emanated from the lion was due to him being there. Tibs pulled out the documents and leaned way from the lion s he returned to looking at them. He shielded them from Samuel’s view. He didn’t want Sam to see what he was looking at as he had cracked some of the document but by no means all. He had to take each lioness one at a time and proceed through her life one step at a time. So far he had done two. of the 14 if not 20 patients. The put the scratch pad that he was using to track the girl’s life. In front of him along with the pencil.
“Samuel what is your business in New Orleans I do not know enough of what you do, you mentioned that you are president of shipping firm, that would have more to do with Eric not Estelle unless you are shipping girls. At which point then yes your business would have to end. I won’t have anyone shipping girls. Especially young infected ones, as that is utterly disturbing.”
Tibs closed the file face down and wrote a few lines in a scratch pad, erased a few lines then added a few. Before he returned his attention to Sam.
“I, while finding the practice distasteful see it is a necessary evil, however when most and by most I mean all of your girls are all infected with lycanthropy and all lionesses and do not appear to age at least that is what the state is seeing, then that is a problem that I can not let stand. Besides something seriously stinks with what I am seeing and what is happening over at her estate. So she has to go. So what terms are you wanting to discuss? As you have not really told me much at all.”
Tibs watched the man. He was weary, as he knew that most Rexes was very foreright. So Far Samuel for all he pomp had really said very little. He knew little of the man so he played things carefully. Samuel’s next move would tell Tibs what he needed to know.

Samuel smiled adjusted his gloves and met the other lion head on. He was a simple in his forthrightness as Mouse that would prove his undoing. Samuel seeing a mirror image of his thick headed brother choked down the urge to illuminate the man as to the way things were outside of his own self-absorbed ‘honor’. It was a hard fought battle against himself. Two things won out, he wasn’t here on official business and he was simply asking terms. What was being offered was the complete opposite Rex Terrence was accepting no terms. He had an opening however.
Terrence offered little but showed much. His notepad while mostly obfuscated due the angle they were in. The fact that he was reading as they spoke and his leaning away from Samuel all meant more to the lion within than to the man but both took notice. Samuel didn’t do what was natural as the Rex leaned away withdrew the urge was to crowd his space to show him which in the end was the bigger lion. It was an animal thing, it was an alpha thing and while that game could be played Samuel was not here to make the mans life more difficult. Sighing he allowed the mans words to stand.
“You’re far too late for that. New Orleans is a hub for shipping of all manner of valuables including human cargo. While I hope Estelle has not diversified her business to that extreme it is a possibility. It is also quite possible that is how so many of her staff are infected with lion lycanthropy. That’s a matter of actual investigation as I am sure you are aware nothing but either a blood test or first-hand awareness will shed light on.”
It wasn’t fair to put the onus on Terrence but Samuel could restrain himself only so much. It was the reason the Rex assumed full control of an area as quickly and completely. As the captain of the ship whatever wrongs were committed by the lions fell to him to correct. It was one of the many wrongs of being a head in the sand lazy Rex. Things got out of hand with lions very quickly for as lazy as they could be when they worked they worked harder and faster than anyone would expect. That went double when there was blood food or any gain to be had in the process. Lions were not inherently good at anything that didn’t require pain and violence hoping for the best was a fools errand that Samuel had sadly watched become the norm with new Rexes. He shook his head as he was hoping Terrence would see this visit for what it was and not choose this moment to make an enemy of someone who should at the very least be an asset.
“As for my business it has very little to do with anything directly within New Orleans save as a port of call. Your lions Eric Estelle and the others are not truly my concern. As such my direct business should be little of yours. What I mean is my business will not be impeded by what takes place here. To give you an idea as to the scope of Exauda Militis there are over ten thousand parcels in my company’s care that traverses New Orleans daily. That is a large enough number that there would be no way for anyone locally to affect. However if it’s a matter of simply paying a toll we can discuss terms I would never prevent a business man form making profit where they can. I draw the line at Extortion however. A toll would come at some cost to us both certain assurances on your part and certain financial investments on mine.”
Samuel allowed that to sink in before continuing. Business must be handled lest it in turn handle you he thought his mantra. As the other lion was surely slowly beginning to see some of the scope of what Samuel was. He was international this meeting was a matter of him stepping down to the man’s level giving a little in fair trade but brooking no further recriminations Samuel went on.
“Speaking directly to the heart of the issue. You are fighting the established alpha’s of your city. That is unfortunate. That however is par for course when one doesn’t assume full control. You haven’t won their hearts or minds. That is what it is and can’t be changed by anyone save you. Blanket terms tend to give some a reason to rail against. Estelle for all of her connections would not ever stand against you unless provoked. Eric is another matter entirely if he were my issue to deal with I would beat him everyday and skin him once every two weeks until he learned to not doubt my word. Death is easy and far too quick for one such as him. He should be a living lesson that you are not to be trifled with.”
Samuel paused again the rustling if Terrence’s assistant was nearer the door then moving away as if she wanted to enter but thought better of it. He was sure the door was thick enough that she wouldn’t hear what was being said but it was a pause the conversation could use. He was offering unsolicited advice. He was not the Militis here. He was not the Rex here. As such he would keep his own counsel.
“As for me, I am a concerned party that represents the world outside your lands and would prefer to stay uninvolved save a favor asked that I would prefer not to have to fulfill in the manner asked. Estelle. She may have done wrong. She may even as we speak be doing greater wrong. She is an institution her comfort house has stood for several generations she has embedded herself within the halls of local power. Leave her unmolested. I will extend my word insuring that if you do so she will cause no further problems to your sensibilities, your pride personally or as a whole.”
The notes Terrence had taken, the file he so carefully hid, were easily read via the window behind him. Samuel hid his anger behind the façade of business. He didn’t give his word lightly nor impermanently. He meant everything he said Estelle wouldn’t trouble the New Orleans Pride again.

“Well if you can give your word that she will not bother me nor my pride not through machination, deed, not because of a placed phone call, a hint or secret meeting, than I won’t bother her. I honestly have no real desire to end her…life but what she is doing is wrong.”
Tibs stopped short of actually saying what it was that she was doing as While he met the younger brother the elder was someone, not something else. Tibs wanted to take his reading before he confided all the cards that he held. As Sam gave very little if anything away, he told Tibs several things first he was prideful, he was dangerous, he could and more than likely has killed, but mostly that he dealt in doing things in ways that were not directly able to be connected to him. which was where all the spycraft came into play.
“Look I know that everyone sees me as this young naïve idealistic new Rex, and in truth I am to some extent. I don’t fault any who see me in tht manner, however I know that I m swimming uphill to take the city from Eric and Estelle, but I am only doing it because no one else was willing to do it and not be even worse. What Estelle is doing is wrong, infecting anyone against their will is wrong. Infecting anyone without them knowing what it all entails is wrong. Running a cathouse using children is wrong. These are her crimes she knows they re wrong but the Rex Eric is doing even worse. So they both must go.”
TIbs hoped that the elevator speech would be enough to sway Samuel to at the very least back off if not leave the city to Tibs altogether. If not his reign could be short lived.

“There it is again a blanket term with no power to enforce it. I am the militis of my Pride because ei enjoy the position. Allow me to share something with you then I will say no more on the subject. If you are to establish your reign simply do it. You can not take something which is already yours you can only take a thing that is not and if you take then someone else can as well. If you are master of the house then do so. Work not uphill but from a position of strength. These Laphas are treating you as if you are not man enough to rule, Not Rex enough to lead and they will attack where they see you are weak. You have laid no terms and have yet begun a war without insuring your Pride is in fact safe. See to your people first then oust your enemies secondly. The people are the ones that will be effected by this after all. ”
There was so much Samuel could impart but this was not his fight. This was not his war. This was by all intents beyond what he’d come for. He needed to conclude this so he would have time to wrap up some business before Monica’s was through for the day. She wasn’t a lioness but she was almost as astute as a lycanthrope which meant he would need to busy himself with other things in more than enough time for his aura to not rage and rail or betray his doings.
“Estelles wrongs are numerous but so too are her connections. If I have your word that you will not assault her I assure you that she will not trouble you.” Standing Samuel nodded to the Rex business concluded he was already mentally making the next few moves that would allow him to tie everything up before focusing on the detective. ‘Exauda is listed should you need a thing ask to speak with Abel, Good day Doctor Long.”
Turning he left the office preparing mentally for what he would have to do.
